How to Care for Gold Jewelry
To care for gold jewelry, take it off before swimming, bathing, cleaning or exercising, put it on after perfume and lotion, and store it on its own. To clean it, use warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft cloth, then dry it well.
What to avoid
- Chlorine and household chemicals.
- Perfume, lotion and cosmetics on the metal. Put them on first, and your jewelry after.
- Rubbing against other jewelry. Gold scratches gold.
- Heavy manual work while wearing 18K or 22K gold, which are softer alloys.
How to clean gold at home
- Mix warm water with a drop of mild soap.
- Wipe the piece gently with a soft cloth.
- Rinse it, then dry it well with a soft cloth.
Diamonds
Diamonds collect skin oils and lotion, which dull their sparkle. Clean them gently with a soft brush, warm water and mild soap. If a stone feels loose or catches on fabric, stop wearing the piece and ask a jeweller to check the setting.
Coloured stones and enamel
Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, heat and harsh chemicals. Wipe them with a soft, damp cloth.
Pearls
Pearls are soft. Put them on last, after perfume and hair products, and wipe them with a soft, dry cloth after wearing. Do not soak them.
How to store gold jewelry
Keep each piece on its own in a soft pouch or lined box, and fasten chains so they do not tangle.
When to see a jeweller
Bring a piece in if a clasp no longer closes properly, a stone moves, or a ring has changed shape. See repair and care, or contact our Westmount boutique.
